Between the Lines – Witches, Midwives and Nurses (live)

25 Nov 2021    20:00   /   Boekenclub@Nest

‘Between the lines’ is a reading café where we read and collectively discuss books, essays, poetry and articles. The text selection is made by curators and exhibiting artist(s). The group consists of max. 10 people and is led by changing discussion leaders.

The pamphlet Witches, Midwives, and Nurses was written in 1973 by Barbara Ehrenreich and Deirdre English. In the text, the American journalists argue that the historical persecution of so-called “witches” is closely linked to the advancement of modern medicine and, in particular, the rise of the medical profession. Ehrenreich and English see the witch hunts as the latest stage of an attack on female healers carried out by a new elite of university-trained medical professionals.

In this edition of ‘Between the lines’, Witches, Midwives and Nurses is read and discussed from the theme of the exhibition Is it possible to be a revolutionary and like flowers?
The conversation is led by co-curator Eva Burgering.
