As part of the exhibition Urning and Urningin. Language and Desire since 1864, Nest presents an afternoon with lectures and a discussion around the legacy of German scientist Karl Heinrich Ulrichs. The legacy of Ulrichs is the starting point of the exhibition at Nest.
Douglas Pretsell will give a 40-minute lecture about the legacy of Karl Heinrich Ulrichs and his book, followed by a short 20-minute lecture by Maurice van Lieshout about the Dutch context, Lucien von Römer and the usage of the word „Uranian“ in the Netherlands. Afterwards there will be a short discussion under the guidance of guest curator Philipp Gufler followed by questions of the audience.
Douglas Pretsell, a Research Fellow at Keele University, is the author of Urning: Queer Identity in the German Nineteenth Century amongst other publications. In 2022 he won the Rhys Isaac Price and the Nancy Mills Medal. He was highly commended in the Australian Historical Association General Thesis Prize in 2023.
Maurice van Lieshout is a historical researcher, writer of non-fiction and active member of Queer-U-Stories. He has written many articles on the history of homosexuality and is the editor and co-author of a number of books on the subject. He is now working on a book about the first generation of queer activists in the Netherlands.
